Kojo Forex Wins Defamation Case Against Bongo Ideas, Court Awards GH₵170,000 in Damages
On 17 May 2023, Ghanaian forex trader Bright Kojo Onipayede, popularly known as Kojo Forex, filed a lawsuit against blogger Albert Nathaniel Hyde, widely known as Bongo Ideas, for defamation. The Kojo Forex defamation case stemmed from a series of tweets that allegedly damaged his reputation.
After reviewing the evidence, Justice Forson Agyapong Baah of the Accra High Court, Jurisdiction 2, delivered a ruling on 28 January 2025. The court awarded Kojo Forex GH₵100,000 in general damages, GH₵50,000 for aggravated, exemplary, and compensatory damages, and GH₵20,000 in legal costs—bringing the total to GH₵170,000.
Beyond the financial penalties, the court ordered Bongo Ideas to issue a public apology and retract his defamatory statements on Twitter within 21 days. Additionally, a permanent injunction was placed on him, preventing further defamatory remarks against Kojo Forex.
This ruling marks a major victory in the Kojo Forex defamation case, highlighting the legal consequences of making false accusations on social media. The case initially gained attention in April 2022, when Kojo Forex warned Bongo Ideas about his online attacks. Now, with this court decision, it serves as a precedent for online defamation cases in Ghana.
