The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has reaffirmed its stance against the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In a statement congratulating President John Mahama, PUWU emphasized its dedication to finding sustainable solutions to the country’s energy challenges while rejecting privatization as an option.

The union acknowledged the various proposals presented by local and international stakeholders to address the energy sector’s issues. However, it criticized some of these recommendations for their lack of robust evidence and insufficient consultation with key stakeholders, especially those pushing for privatization.

“We are aware of the numerous local and international entities expressing interest in investing in ECG. Many of these groups have re-emerged with familiar agendas, despite facing strong opposition in the past,” PUWU stated.

The union’s statement underscores its commitment to preserving ECG as a public entity while advocating for practical and inclusive reforms to improve the energy sector’s performance.

The Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU) has raised alarm over the increasing political interference in the management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the soaring costs of power sector inputs, which are driving up electricity tariffs.

Despite these issues, PUWU has reiterated its willingness to cooperate with the government in addressing the country’s energy, housing, and water challenges, while ensuring that these essential services remain affordable for the Ghanaian population.

On the other hand, Energy Minister-designate John Abdulai Jinapor and President John Mahama have stressed the importance of involving the private sector in the operations of ECG. During his vetting session on Monday, Mr. Jinapor revealed plans to form a seven-member committee. The committee will consist of technical, financial, and legal experts, as well as representatives from the energy industry and consumers, with the aim of assessing and enhancing ECG’s performance.
