Energy Minister-designate John Abdulai Jinapor has revealed a major plan to revamp the metering system of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in a bid to enhance revenue collection and reduce losses. The overhaul will involve the urgent replacement of approximately 2.9 million meters.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, 2025, Jinapor responded to an inquiry from Hemang Lower Denkyira MP, Lawrence Agyinsam, about strategies to improve ECG’s revenue generation.
Jinapor highlighted that out of ECG’s 5.2 million meters, 4.8 million are active, but nearly 3 million are not functioning optimally. He also revealed plans to allow customers to purchase their own meters, which will be installed by licensed technicians.
Additionally, the new metering system will incorporate mobile money technology, enabling customers to activate their meters using a code-based system, making the process more accessible and efficient. Jinapor emphasized that this approach would lower costs for customers, as economies of scale would help reduce the price of meters.
