The Tamale Circuit Court has granted bail to two midwives standing trial over the alleged disappearance of a newborn baby at the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga.

The accused persons, Frank Atanga, 52, and Mariam Mohammed, 32, appeared before Her Honour Afua Srakubea Agyeman-Darbu, who granted them bail pending the continuation of the case.

According to the court’s ruling, each accused person was granted bail in the sum of GH¢150,000 with two sureties. The court further directed that the sureties meet all required conditions before the bail terms can take effect.

The two health workers have been charged with conspiracy to steal and abduction in connection with the disappearance of the newborn baby.

The case has generated significant public interest across the East Gonja Municipality and beyond, with many residents demanding answers over the circumstances surrounding the missing child.

Prosecutors allege that the accused persons played roles in events linked to the baby’s disappearance, leading to their arrest and prosecution.

While details of the prosecution’s evidence are yet to be fully presented before the court, investigators believe there may have been a coordinated effort connected to the alleged incident.

The disappearance of the newborn has sparked widespread concern, with calls for a thorough investigation to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served.

However, it is important to note that the accused persons have not been convicted of any offence and remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

The court has adjourned the case to July 9, 2026, when both accused persons are expected to reappear for the continuation of proceedings.

As investigations and court hearings continue, many Ghanaians will be closely following developments in a case that has shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about child safety within healthcare facilities.
