The Ministry of the Interior has issued a flood alert for residents of the Greater Accra Region, urging the public to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days.

In a statement, the ministry warned that the anticipated rains could lead to flooding in low-lying and flood-prone communities, posing risks to lives, property and transportation. Residents have therefore been advised to take precautionary measures and closely monitor weather updates.

The ministry encouraged people living in flood-prone areas to consider relocating to safer locations if necessary and to avoid attempting to cross flooded roads, drains or rivers during periods of heavy rainfall.

Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution while driving, particularly on roads known to experience flooding during heavy downpours. The ministry stressed that safety should remain the top priority, urging drivers not to take unnecessary risks.

Emergency response agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), have been placed on alert to respond swiftly to any incidents that may arise as a result of the expected weather conditions.

The Ministry of the Interior further called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to ensure that drains are kept clear and to work closely with emergency services to minimise the impact of any potential flooding.

Residents are also being encouraged to stay informed through official weather updates and emergency advisories while reporting any flood-related incidents to the appropriate authorities.

As the rainy season continues, the ministry is appealing to the public to cooperate with emergency responders and follow all safety directives to help prevent avoidable loss of life and damage to property.
