Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, the Minister-designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, has vowed to breathe new life into the Komenda Sugar Factory to benefit Ghanaians.

During her appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, the Techiman North MP acknowledged that the factory remains non-operational due to a shortage of raw materials and missing components.

“The Komenda Sugar Factory is currently not functioning, primarily because of a lack of raw materials to sustain the industry and some missing parts,” she explained.

Madam Ofosu-Adjare stressed the importance of conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the facility before taking further steps.

“A full assessment of the factory’s condition is critical. Once this is done, we can determine the necessary actions to restore it,” she stated.

She highlighted that Ghana spends nearly $500 million annually on sugar imports, underscoring the factory’s potential to reduce dependency on foreign sugar and boost local production.

“If approved, I will work closely with the ministry to assess the factory’s condition and take the necessary steps to ensure it becomes a valuable asset for the country,” she assured.

Commissioned in 2016, the Komenda Sugar Factory was intended to be a key driver of Ghana’s industrialisation efforts. However, it has faced significant operational and management setbacks, leaving it dormant. Madam Ofosu-Adjare reaffirmed her commitment to turning the factory into a functional and impactful venture once again.
