The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) is poised to initiate a nationwide strike today, Monday, November 18, unless there is an eleventh-hour resolution.
The strike stems from frustration with the government’s prolonged failure to finalize and implement updated conditions of service for TEWU members, despite years of negotiations and reviews.
In a statement, TEWU highlighted concerns across institutions under its purview, including the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority, the Museums and Monuments Board, Public Technical Universities, and Public Universities.
The union has accused the government of stalling the process, leaving its members dissatisfied with their current working conditions.
Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has called on TEWU to reconsider its decision and return to negotiations. The NLC has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, November 20, 2024, involving the union and other stakeholders to address the issues at hand.
TEWU has not yet officially responded to the NLC’s request. As it stands, the planned industrial action threatens to disrupt educational institutions across the country unless a resolution is reached swiftly.
