The National Tripartite Committee, made up of government representatives, employers, and labor/association groups, has officially started talks on the 2025 minimum wage as of February 3, 2025.
This marks an essential milestone in determining wage standards for the coming financial year. After these discussions, attention will turn to setting the base pay for public sector employees.
However, the negotiations are already behind schedule. According to the Public Financial Management (PFM) Act, the process was expected to wrap up by the end of April 2024. The delay in finalizing the wage discussions presents serious risks to the timely preparation of the 2025 national budget.
The government has called on all social partners, including employers and labor representatives, to fast-track the negotiations. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, acting spokesperson for the president, underscored the importance of completing the talks promptly to establish the financial framework needed for the upcoming fiscal year.
