Ghana has been ranked 8th in Africa for internet quality, according to the 2024 Surfshark Digital Quality of Life Index (DQL). The country achieved an index score of 0.304 in the latest report.

Mauritius topped the African rankings with an internet quality index of 0.361, followed by Ivory Coast in second place, Egypt in third, and Algeria in fourth. South Africa, Senegal, and Burkina Faso secured the 5th, 6th, and 7th spots, respectively, while Morocco and Nigeria completed the top 10 at 9th and 10th place.

The assessment of internet quality considers factors such as speed, stability, and overall network performance, which influence how effectively people, businesses, and institutions connect online for communication, work, and entertainment.

Despite progress, the report highlighted ongoing challenges across Africa, including slow internet speeds, expensive data, and inconsistent network coverage. These issues continue to restrict access to essential digital services like online banking, e-commerce, and telemedicine.

The Digital Quality of Life Index

The 2024 Surfshark DQL Index evaluated 121 countries based on five core pillars: internet affordability, internet quality, e-infrastructure, e-security, and e-government.

These factors were analyzed through 14 key indicators, providing a comprehensive measure of a country’s digital well-being.

The report found that African nations still face significant digital challenges, particularly in internet quality, which includes both mobile and fixed broadband connections.

Globally, European countries dominated the rankings, with only 18 non-European nations making it into the top 50. African countries performed poorly overall, with the highest-ranked nation placing 66th on the global scale.
