Chairman Wontumi Questioned by CID Over Galamsey Allegations
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, reported to their headquarters on Monday, May 26, 2025, in response to an invitation over allegations of illegal mining.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) appeared with a legal team led by former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame. According to the CID, he is being investigated for allegedly mining without a license, polluting water bodies, and operating in a forest reserve without authorization.
Wontumi fully cooperated, provided a statement, and was granted bail with instructions to report back to the police on Tuesday, May 27, at 3 PM.
After the session, Wontumi told journalists that he submitted his legal mining license and denied involvement in galamsey. He also dismissed claims of mining in protected areas, challenging authorities to prove it.
This comes days after a failed attempt to arrest him at home on May 23 by a combined National Security and police team.
