Foreign Affairs Ministry Cancels 701 Diplomatic and Service Passports Over Non-Compliance
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has revoked 701 diplomatic and service passports after several public calls for their return went unheeded.
Despite repeated notices, many former public officials and other qualified individuals failed to surrender their official travel documents. In response, the Ministry has placed 341 diplomatic passports and 360 service passports on a stop list, making them invalid for travel.
Those affected include ex-ministers, their spouses, former Members of Parliament, past members of the Council of State and their partners, retired judges, former regional ministers, MMDCEs, non-career ambassadors, and people tied to the National Cathedral project. The list also covers some religious and traditional leaders, businesspeople, and other former government appointees.
The Ministry has instructed all border and immigration officers to seize any cancelled passports found in use. This action falls under the authority of the Passports and Travel Certificates Act of 1967 (NLCD 155), especially sections 6 and 7, which guide the issuing and handling of such passports.
Officials say the step is part of efforts to protect the integrity of Ghana’s official travel documents and ensure they are used properly by those currently in service.
