The Ghana Education Service (GES) has reversed its decision and instructed the management of Sawla Senior High School (SHS) in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, Savannah Region, to immediately reinstate over 30 students who were suspended indefinitely last Wednesday.
In an interview with JoyNews’ Isaac Nongya, Anthony Kwasi Yeboah, the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Director of GES, clarified that the school did not have the authority to impose such a penalty on the students. As a result, the headmaster was directed to recall all students involved.
“These students had already left the school when the headmaster and his assistant came to inform me about the suspension. I told him to bring the students back, as he does not have the authority to suspend them,” Mr. Yeboah explained.
He added that he would personally visit the school on Wednesday to engage with the management and ensure that the students return to continue their education.
The suspension of the students followed an investigation conducted by a seven-member committee into allegations of immoral behavior and possession of mobile phones on the school premises. The majority of the suspended students are second-year girls. However, their indefinite suspension was implemented without consulting the district or regional GES offices and without informing their parents.
The decision to recall the students came after the news of their suspension was reported by Myjoyonline, which drew attention to the issue. The GES has assured the public that it will closely monitor the situation moving forward.
