The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has launched a cholera vaccination campaign in Accra to curb the ongoing outbreak affecting multiple regions.

The campaign, which kicks off on Friday, February 14, aims to immunize over 300,000 residents in the capital as part of urgent measures to control the spread of the deadly disease.

Ghana is currently grappling with a nationwide cholera outbreak, with over 4,000 reported cases across five regions—Greater Accra, Eastern, Central, Ashanti, and Western. The outbreak has already claimed more than 40 lives, raising serious concerns among health officials.

Cholera, a highly contagious bacterial infection, is mainly transmitted through contaminated food and water, causing severe diarrhoea, dehydration, and potentially fatal complications. The outbreak has been linked to poor sanitation, limited access to clean drinking water, and unsafe food handling practices.

Health officials warn that if swift action is not taken, the situation could worsen.

As part of Ghana’s national response strategy, authorities are deploying oral cholera vaccines (OCV) to high-risk communities. The vaccine offers short-term protection and is especially vital in areas with inadequate sanitation and limited access to potable water.

While the vaccination campaign is underway, health authorities continue to urge the public to follow strict hygiene practices to prevent further spread of the disease.
