The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has issued a strong caution to nurses and other healthcare professionals against exhibiting rude and unprofessional behavior towards patients.

Speaking at a cholera sensitization program at the Winneba Government Hospital, the minister expressed concern that such attitudes discourage people, especially the elderly, from seeking medical attention, even when they are critically ill.

Addressing the Impact of Poor Patient Care

While acknowledging the dedication and compassion of most healthcare workers, he noted that a small group of “bad nuts” are tarnishing the reputation of the profession by treating patients poorly, fostering fear and mistrust.

“We have excellent and highly professional health workers, but unfortunately, a few individuals create a negative impression with their attitude towards patients. It is worrying to hear that some sick individuals, particularly the elderly, refuse to visit hospitals because they fear being insulted or shouted at by a nurse,” the minister stated.

He urged healthcare workers to uphold professionalism, stressing that no level of provocation justifies mistreating patients.

“I appeal to those few individuals engaging in such behavior to change. While we are not out to punish anyone, we must ensure patients feel safe and respected when seeking medical care,” he added.

Declining Attendance in Public Health Facilities

The minister pointed out that poor patient interactions contribute to declining attendance at some public health facilities, with more people preferring private hospitals due to better treatment.

“In some districts, government hospitals record fewer patient visits compared to private health centers, and a key reason is how patients are treated. This is a reality we must address rather than ignore,” he emphasized.

Commitment to Change

To address these concerns, the minister hinted at stricter enforcement of disciplinary measures for misconduct while also pledging to improve working conditions to alleviate frustrations faced by healthcare workers.

“We will ensure that necessary interventions are put in place to support our health professionals, but at the same time, we must demand a higher level of professionalism to protect and encourage patients,” he concluded.
