Widows, the elderly, and other vulnerable individuals in Akyem Manso, a rural community in the Asene-Manso-Akroso District of the Eastern Region, are calling on the government to include them in the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program.

Many of these individuals are struggling with extreme poverty, inadequate social support, and limited access to basic necessities. They believe being part of the LEAP program would offer them financial relief and restore their dignity.

Introduced in 2008, the LEAP initiative provides cash grants to impoverished households, including orphans, the elderly, and persons with severe disabilities. However, despite its existence, numerous disadvantaged residents of Akyem Manso remain without assistance, making survival increasingly difficult.

A Call for Immediate Support

Their struggle was highlighted during a charitable donation exercise organized by Okukudurofo Amoahwusi I, the Ekuonahemaa of Akyem Manso. In an effort to alleviate their hardships, she distributed food items, clothing, and cash to widows and the aged in the community.

Addressing the gathering, Okukudurofo Amoahwusi I underscored the urgent need for government intervention.

“These elderly individuals and widows have served their families and communities, yet many now live in distressing conditions. The LEAP program was designed to support people like them, and I humbly urge the government to extend its coverage to my people,” she stated.

She also condemned the mistreatment of widows, particularly the common practice where some families seize their late husbands’ properties, leaving them destitute.

“Widows already face immense grief; taking away their rightful means of survival only deepens their suffering. As a society, we must protect their rights and uphold their dignity,” she urged.

Community Members Await Government Action

Residents of Akyem Manso echoed her sentiments, hoping their plea would be heard and acted upon. They remain optimistic that the government will extend the LEAP program to cover their community, offering much-needed relief to the most vulnerable.
