The Ghana Health Service has launched a cholera vaccination campaign aimed at children in the Accra Metropolitan area as part of ongoing efforts to control and prevent the spread of cholera, particularly in high-risk regions.
The vaccination campaign, which will take place from February 14 to 17, 2025, is part of a national strategy to curb cholera outbreaks, with a focus on the Greater Accra Region, where the disease poses a significant threat.
Deborah Noble-Yorke, Health Promotion Officer at Ablekuma South District, explained that the vaccination will specifically target children in areas identified as high-risk, including Ablekuma South, Okaikwei South, and Ashiedu Keteke, all located within the Accra Metropolitan area.
Noble-Yorke highlighted the importance of the initiative, saying, “Our primary goal is to focus on high-risk areas and ensure children in these districts receive the vaccine to prevent the spread of cholera throughout the region.”
She further clarified that pregnant women are excluded from the vaccination campaign, as the vaccine is not recommended for them.
To ensure broad participation, vaccination teams will be stationed in various public spaces, including schools, markets, and bus stations across Greater Accra. This will make the vaccine more accessible to families.
The Ghana Health Service is urging all parents to take advantage of this vital vaccination effort and protect their children from the dangers of cholera. Noble-Yorke also called for the cooperation of the public, stating, “We encourage all parents to ensure their children are vaccinated and help us prevent the spread of cholera.”
