The 68th Independence Day parade on March 6, 2025, will be held exclusively at the Jubilee House, a shift in venue designed to reduce costs, according to the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, the Abura Asebu Kwamankese MP revealed that the decision marks the suspension of the regional rotation policy for the annual event.
While acknowledging the original intent behind rotating the celebrations across regions, Ofosu Kwakye explained that President Mahama had called for the policy to be put on hold due to rising costs. He noted that after a review, it became clear that rotating the celebrations added substantial financial burdens, which, given the country’s economic challenges, were unsustainable.
“The cost implications of moving the celebrations across different regions have proven to be significant,” he said. “For example, last year’s celebration in Ho cost the country GH¢15 million, and similar costs would be incurred each time the event is held outside Accra.”
With the national budget under pressure, the government has decided to scale down the event to ensure more responsible spending. He emphasized that the suspension of the rotational policy and the scaling down of the event reflect the government’s commitment to prudent financial management.
Though the President recognizes the importance of Independence Day celebrations as a key part of the nation’s history, he is keenly aware of the current economic difficulties. As such, the government aims to mark the occasion in a modest but meaningful way without overburdening the national budget.
“This year, the focus will be on holding a significant event at the Jubilee House that will capture the essence of the celebration while keeping expenses in check,” Ofosu Kwakye concluded.
