The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the reopening of St. Vincent College of Education following successful talks with the Paramount Chief of Dagbon, Ya-Naa Abukari Mahama.

The college had been closed earlier on the orders of the Ya-Naa due to a disagreement over the appointment of a new principal. However, a key breakthrough was achieved after Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Director-General of GTEC, led a delegation to the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi to engage with the Ya-Naa.

The discussions resulted in a peaceful resolution, clearing the way for the institution to resume normal operations. Professor Abdulai announced that the college would reopen on Wednesday, January 22, and reassured stakeholders that the issues had been fully addressed.

“I want to assure the public and all stakeholders in tertiary education that the matter has been resolved, and the institution will return to normal by tomorrow,” Professor Abdulai stated.

Speaking on the closure, Musah Yakubu, Public Relations Officer for the Ya-Naa, explained that the decision was a temporary measure aimed at ensuring calm during the resolution process.

“His Majesty prioritized peace and dialogue before moving forward with discussions with the Director-General of GTEC. Now that these talks have concluded successfully, we are confident that St. Vincent College will resume operations as planned,” Yakubu noted.

The reopening of the college is expected to bring relief to students, staff, and stakeholders as normal academic activities resume.
