The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has attributed responsibility for the recent tragic shooting at the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and President John Mahama. The violent incident, which occurred on Saturday night, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and left several others injured.
In a press conference, NPP Communications Director Richard Ahiagbah accused the NDC of failing to address post-election violence, which he claims has emboldened criminal acts.
“This unfortunate incident is the direct outcome of the NDC’s inaction on the wave of post-election violence that has plagued our nation since the December 7th general elections,” Ahiagbah stated.
He criticized the NDC’s leadership, alleging that their silence has encouraged lawlessness:
“The NDC must accept responsibility for this heinous act. The party’s failure to lead and caution its supporters against illegal behavior has brought us to this point,” Ahiagbah asserted.
Calls for Accountability
The NPP further alleged that the NDC had neglected its duty to protect its own members, referencing the victims who were reportedly affiliated with the party.
“They failed to save the lives of their own members, who were tragically murdered in Obuasi, due to a lack of leadership and control,” Ahiagbah added.
Demands for a Thorough Investigation
The NPP called on the Ghana Police Service to conduct a transparent and impartial investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for justice for the victims and their families.
“We demand a thorough investigation into this matter and urge the police to act swiftly and fairly,” said Ahiagbah.
The party also warned against any attempts to shield those responsible:
“The Ghana Police Service must not engage in any backroom negotiations with the John Mahama administration to cover up this matter. Justice must be served,” he concluded.
The NPP’s remarks come as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the tragic incident, calling for accountability and efforts to prevent further violence.
