The National Communications Authority Staff Association (NCASA) has expressed its gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for appointing Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
In a congratulatory statement, NCASA described Rev. Ing. Fianko’s appointment as a well-earned recognition of his dedication, expertise, and exemplary leadership.
“Your appointment is a testament to your hard work, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to excellence,” the statement read. “We are confident that under your leadership, the NCA will continue to thrive and achieve greater milestones in regulating Ghana’s communications sector.”
The association also commended President Mahama for recognizing and promoting talent from within the Authority, calling the decision an endorsement of Rev. Ing. Fianko’s competence and leadership capabilities.
An Inspirational Career Journey
Rev. Ing. Fianko’s career with the NCA began as a National Service Person (NSP) in 2004. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become the Director of Engineering, ultimately reaching the position of Acting Director General.
His journey, according to NCASA, serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting the importance of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence.
“This appointment marks a historic moment for the NCA, as it is the first time the Director General position has been filled by someone from within the organization,” NCASA noted.
A Wealth of Experience
Rev. Ing. Fianko is an accomplished electronic communications engineer with over two decades of experience in radio frequency spectrum management, telecom and broadcasting regulation, policy development, ICT industry research, and public speaking.
Internationally recognized, he was elected in 2022 to the Radio Regulations Board (RRB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), where he will serve a four-year term from 2023 to 2026, representing the global radio communications community.
During his tenure at the NCA, he has led numerous initiatives, including managing Ghana’s radio frequency spectrum for telecommunications and broadcasting services, chairing the Significant Market Power (SMP) Operations Team, and contributing to the development of industry standards.
Notably, Rev. Ing. Fianko played a pivotal role in Ghana’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, serving as Secretary to the Digital Broadcasting Migration Committee from 2010 to 2016. His work in developing DTT receiver specifications has since been adopted as ECOWAS standards.
Academic and Professional Achievements
Rev. Ing. Fianko holds a degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), a master’s degree in Communications Management from Buckinghamshire New University in England, and an MPhil in Applied Business Leadership and Management from Universidad Católica de Murcia, Spain.
He is a member of the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
In addition to his technical and professional accomplishments, Rev. Ing. Fianko is also a minister of the Methodist Church Ghana, a published author, and the founding leader of the evangelistic outreach ministry, Nkwa.Life.

With a proven track record in technology regulation and innovation, Rev. Ing. Fianko’s appointment is expected to usher in a new era of growth and technological advancement for Ghana’s communications sector.
