The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has dismissed allegations that its staff were responsible for a fire outbreak at a residential property in Two-Streams, Koforidua, following a disconnection exercise.

In a statement signed by Charles Nii Ayiku, General Manager of External Communications, ECG described the accusations as unfounded and urged the public to disregard them.

According to the company, the incident involved a customer with an outstanding electricity debt of GH¢6,519.38, dating back to September 2024. As part of its “Operation Keep the Lights On” revenue mobilization campaign, ECG officials visited the property on January 24, 2025, to address the issue. Upon inspection, they discovered an illegal self-reconnection and promptly disconnected the property from the pole outside, citing the violation.

The disconnection exercise reportedly met resistance, with the customer allegedly threatening the team with a machete. The ECG staff sought police assistance to ensure their safety and completed the disconnection.

The fire at the premises reportedly occurred hours after ECG personnel had left the scene. The company asserted that disconnecting power directly from the pole is a routine procedure and cannot cause a fire outbreak.

“Disconnecting power supply directly from a pole completely cuts electricity to the premises and cannot, under any circumstances, result in a fire. The customer’s allegations against ECG are therefore baseless and false,” the statement read.

ECG reiterated its commitment to safety and professionalism, stressing that it would never engage in activities that jeopardize lives or property. The company further advised customers to pay their electricity bills on time and avoid illegal connections to prevent similar incidents.
