The ongoing conflict in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region has brought the education sector to a standstill, leaving the future of thousands of students in jeopardy as schools remain closed.

Jonathan Korsinah, the Municipal Director of Education for Nkwanta South, has issued an urgent call to community leaders to ensure the safety of teachers so that academic activities can resume.

In an interview with Adom News, Mr. Korsinah disclosed that the unrest has led to the closure of 24 public schools and 18 private schools, disrupting the education of approximately 9,237 students. He also revealed that four schools in highly volatile areas would stay shut until adequate security measures are put in place to protect teachers.

“This isn’t the first time we’re facing such a situation, but this current crisis is far more severe,” he explained. “Over 579 public school teachers have fled to safer locations out of fear for their safety.”

Mr. Korsinah emphasized that a secure environment for teachers is essential, warning that the education system in Nkwanta South could face further deterioration if safety concerns are not addressed.

“Our directorate is committed to ensuring access to quality education for all students, but this can only happen if teachers feel safe and supported,” he added.

In response to the crisis, Geoffrey Kini, the Member of Parliament for Nkwanta South, has urged education authorities and parents to prioritize the safety of teachers and students before rushing to reopen schools. He stressed the need for sustainable peace in the municipality and called on all stakeholders, including parents, community leaders, and local authorities, to work together to restore stability.

The MP expressed optimism that, with collective effort, Nkwanta South would soon achieve lasting peace, allowing the education sector to recover and thrive once again.
