Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has issued a strong warning to lawmakers, emphasizing that any Member of Parliament (MP) found engaging in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, will face severe consequences.
Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, January 28, Speaker Bagbin stressed the urgent need to tackle galamsey, describing it as a major threat to Ghana’s environment.
Call for Accountability
Bagbin reminded MPs of their duty to set a positive example and uphold the law, urging them to steer clear of activities that contribute to environmental degradation.
“Honourable members, we must confront galamsey head-on. If any of you are involved, I advise you to desist immediately. As a House, we must be ready to take decisive action. If I receive any credible information linking an MP to illegal mining, I will ensure the necessary steps are taken,” he warned.
Persistent Challenges Despite Efforts
His remarks come amid growing concerns over the devastation caused by illegal mining, particularly the destruction of water bodies and forests.
Despite numerous government interventions—including task forces, bans, and military crackdowns—galamsey remains widespread, often fueled by the involvement of powerful individuals.
Speaker Bagbin’s warning signals Parliament’s commitment to addressing the issue and holding offenders accountable.
