Bank of GhanaThe Bank of Ghana (BoG) has extended the deadline for the registration of International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) operating in the country to July 31, 2026, giving existing operators more time to comply with regulatory requirements.

The extension was announced in a notice issued to IMTOs, banks, Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDIs), and Payment Service Providers (PSPs). According to the central bank, the decision follows an earlier directive issued in January 2026 regarding the registration and operation of money transfer companies in Ghana.

The Bank of Ghana is urging all IMTOs that have not yet completed their registration process to take advantage of the extension and submit the required documents before the new deadline.

However, the regulator has warned that any operator that fails to comply within the stipulated period will no longer be permitted to operate in Ghana.

According to the notice, any existing arrangements or partnerships between non-compliant IMTOs and regulated financial institutions, including banks, SDIs, and PSPs, will automatically become null and void after the deadline.

The central bank further cautioned that operators who fail to meet the registration requirements could face additional regulatory sanctions and enforcement actions under Ghana’s financial laws.

The move forms part of the Bank of Ghana’s broader efforts to strengthen oversight within the remittance sector, improve regulatory compliance, and enhance the integrity of cross-border money transfer services.

BoG has also directed all regulated financial institutions to verify that their IMTO partners have fulfilled the registration requirements before continuing any business relationship.

The extension is expected to serve as a final opportunity for operators to regularise their status as the central bank intensifies efforts to improve governance, transparency, and compliance within Ghana’s growing remittance industry.
