Corruption in Ghana Goes Beyond Politicians, We must stop blaming only politicians – Afenyo-Markin
In a recent address at the Constitution Day Public Lecture, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin emphasized that corruption extends beyond the political sphere, urging a collective societal approach to combat it. He questioned the tendency to associate corruption solely with politicians, suggesting that such a narrow focus undermines efforts to address the issue effectively. Afenyo-Markin highlighted that cultural and societal expectations often influence unethical decisions, indicating that corruption is a pervasive problem requiring collective action. He also noted that individuals who benefit from corrupt practices seldom voice concerns, whereas those who do not are often the loudest critics. To foster accountability, he called for a more active role from civil society in scrutinizing leaders and suggested the introduction of anti-corruption curricula at various educational levels. Afenyo-Markin concluded by advocating for a fair and comprehensive assessment of corruption, recognizing its presence across all sectors of society.
