The government is set to meet with various drivers unions today to discuss possible changes in transport fares amid rising operational costs.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe clarified that, as of now, no formal proposals have been made regarding either an increase or a reduction in fares.
The discussion has become necessary due to recent hikes in key cost factors such as fuel prices and vehicle spare parts, both of which significantly impact transport fares.
Speaking to journalists after a working visit to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Accra, the minister acknowledged that preliminary discussions had taken place:
“Unofficially, I have engaged with the unions, and I must say they have been very cooperative. However, we haven’t reached any final decision yet.”
He further assured that another meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, after which a resolution will be reached regarding fare adjustments:
“We will be meeting them again, and after those discussions, we can determine the appropriate fare structure. I assure you that any decision taken will be in the best interest of all stakeholders, including passengers.”
Since the current administration took office, fuel prices have increased, prompting repeated calls from transport unions for fare adjustments to reflect the rising costs of operation.
