The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has committed to implementing key reforms in the social protection sector within the next 120 days.
Speaking at a meeting with representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) on Tuesday, February 6, 2025, she outlined her plans to enhance social protection policies and overhaul the country’s school feeding programme.
Her pledge aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for sustainable and transparent improvements in social welfare initiatives.
The school feeding programme, in particular, has faced criticism over politicization, food shortages, and financial difficulties. Addressing these concerns, the minister assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to improving efficiency and expanding support for vulnerable communities.
“There is still much to be done. Several policies remain incomplete, and we need the collaboration of NGOs and CSOs to tackle these challenges at the grassroots level,” she stated.
A key proposal under the reforms is the decentralization of the school feeding programme to enhance quality control and accountability.
“If you wouldn’t eat it yourself, don’t serve it to others—that is my mission,” Hon. Lartey asserted, emphasizing the need to ensure nutritious meals while promoting locally sourced ingredients.
