Ghana is mourning the loss of one of its most distinguished diplomats and statesmen, James Victor Gbeho, following the official notification of his passing to President John Dramani Mahama by his family.
In line with cultural and diplomatic protocol, a delegation representing the Gbeho family paid a courtesy call on President Mahama at the Presidency on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, to formally inform him of the veteran diplomat’s death before a public announcement was made.
James Victor Gbeho was widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most accomplished diplomats, dedicating decades of service to both the country and the international community. His influence extended beyond Ghana’s borders when he rose to become President of the ECOWAS Commission, where he played a significant role in promoting regional integration, peace, and cooperation across West Africa.
Following the notification, President Mahama expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and paid tribute to Gbeho’s remarkable contributions to Ghana, the ECOWAS subregion, and global diplomacy.
