President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to combine prayer with hard work, discipline and responsibility, stressing that faith alone cannot transform the country’s economy or guarantee lasting prosperity.

Speaking at the 2026 National Day of Prayer in Accra on Wednesday, July 1, the President said while prayer remains an important pillar of national life, meaningful development can only be achieved when citizens complement their faith with purposeful action.

The event brought together political leaders, clergy, traditional authorities and citizens to pray for peace, unity and Ghana’s continued progress.

President Mahama called on Ghanaians to embrace a strong work ethic and actively contribute to nation-building, noting that every citizen has a role to play in achieving the country’s development aspirations.

According to him, sustainable growth requires commitment, diligence and discipline in both public and private life.

Drawing inspiration from the Bible, the President said genuine faith must be matched with practical effort.

“Our national journey reminds us of an enduring truth, ‘faith without works is dead,’ says James 2:26. And prayer without responsibility cannot transform an economy. Hope without discipline cannot create prosperity,” he stated.

He further cited the examples of Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem and Joseph preparing Egypt for famine, explaining that both combined faith with hard work and careful planning to achieve success.

President Mahama urged Ghanaians to adopt the same mindset, stressing that national transformation depends on collective responsibility, discipline and action alongside prayer.
