The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a shipment containing approximately five million tramadol tablets with an estimated street value of GH¢100 million at the Accra International Airport, arresting three suspects in connection with the attempted importation.
The seizure was carried out during an intelligence-led operation after NACOC officers detected and intercepted the consignment at the airport.
In a statement, the Commission said the operation forms part of its continued efforts to dismantle illicit drug trafficking networks and protect public health and national security.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the intercepted shipment was intended for distribution within Ghana and possibly other countries in the West African sub-region.
NACOC believes the consignment may be connected to a wider drug trafficking network and has indicated that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals suspected to be involved in the operation.
The Commission said the seized tramadol tablets have been secured as evidence, while forensic analysis and documentary examinations are being conducted to support further investigations.
NACOC reaffirmed its commitment to fighting drug trafficking and ensuring that persons involved in the illegal trade face the full consequences of the law.
The Commission also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities as part of efforts to combat the spread of illicit drugs.
The three suspects are expected to appear before court after investigations are completed, in accordance with Ghana’s narcotics laws.
