The Ministry of Roads and Highways has attributed delays in the Ofankor-Nsawam road project to ongoing legal battles, which have indefinitely postponed its completion. Originally set to be finished by July 2024, the project now faces uncertainty due to unresolved court cases.
Speaking to Citi FM, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, stated that the disputes have hindered construction, especially on key sections of the road, as work cannot proceed until legal matters are resolved.
The majority of these court cases involve property owners challenging demolitions or demanding compensation, prolonging the impasse.
“Last year alone, over 100 cases were filed, and while we have resolved about 20, approximately 80 remain active between Amasaman and Nsawam,” Yartey explained. “Until these disputes are settled, construction in affected areas cannot continue. We must respect the legal process.”
The $350 million project is a crucial part of efforts to upgrade the Accra-Kumasi highway, one of Ghana’s busiest routes. It is expected to ease congestion, facilitate trade, and enhance commuter safety.
However, residents and motorists who depend on the road daily have expressed growing frustration over the prolonged delays. Many are concerned about worsening traffic conditions and the economic toll of the stalled project, urging the government to resolve the legal issues swiftly so construction can resume.
