The legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has responded to the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) directive for him to appear in person on February 10, 2025, stating that he was abroad undergoing medical treatment.
In a letter dated January 31, the lawyers explained that Ofori-Atta was unable to honor the OSP’s earlier summons on January 24, as he was out of the country at the time. They further clarified that he had not seen the OSP’s letter initially because it was left at his security post during his absence.
According to his legal representatives, the former minister had formally informed both the previous and current Chiefs of Staff about his medical trip in early January. They added that he remains under medical observation, with ongoing tests and no confirmed treatment plan yet.
As a result, the lawyers requested that the OSP reschedule his in-person appearance for a later date upon his return to Ghana. They also assured their willingness to cooperate with investigators and provide any relevant information.
Their response comes in the wake of the OSP’s February 12 press conference, where Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng declared Ofori-Atta a fugitive, alleging his involvement in multiple corruption-related cases.
The OSP has launched investigations into suspected financial irregularities tied to several high-profile contracts, including deals involving Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Electricity Company of Ghana, Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), the National Cathedral project, and the Ministry of Health’s ambulance procurement.
Prior to the press conference, reports surfaced that Ofori-Atta’s residence in Accra had been raided by individuals believed to be security personnel. However, the Special Prosecutor dismissed these claims, stating categorically that the OSP was not behind the purported raid.
