A recent report from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has revealed that 3,228 Ghanaians are among over 1.4 million immigrants listed for deportation.
According to fiscal statistics from November 2024, a total of 1,445,549 individuals face removal from the U.S., with a significant number hailing from various African nations.
Among those affected are:
- 3,690 Nigerians
- 393 Ugandans
- 1,282 Kenyans
- 427 Togolese
- 60 Gabonese
- 1,035 Gambians
- 1,897 Guineans
Reasons for Deportation
ICE stated that the affected individuals—classified as “aliens”—are facing deportation due to various reasons, including:
- Lack of proper documentation
- Failure to establish credible fear of persecution if returned to their home country
- Receiving a negative determination of credible fear from an immigration judge
Challenges in Deportation Process
Despite issuing final removal orders, ICE has acknowledged that deporting some individuals remains difficult due to logistical issues and legal barriers. Under Title 8 of the U.S. Code, the agency has the authority to remove noncitizens with final deportation orders, but enforcement is not always straightforward.
Impact on African Immigrants
This move is part of former President Trump’s intensified crackdown on undocumented immigrants, a policy that has sparked widespread criticism and concerns over its potential impact on African communities in the U.S.
So far, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has not released an official statement on the issue. However, the revelation has ignited discussions about the fate of those affected and the potential impact on their families back home.
