Kofi Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation-designate, has revealed that discussions are ongoing to secure financial assistance for players in the Ghana Premier League.

The issue of low wages in the league has been a persistent challenge, leading many talented players to seek better opportunities abroad. This has, in turn, impacted the overall quality of the competition as several key players have left.

During his appearance before the Vetting Committee, Adams emphasized the importance of retaining top talent in the league. He proposed that providing allowances to players could be a viable solution to this issue.

“We’ve discussed offering allowances to help retain some of our players,” said Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem constituency.

He highlighted the extreme lengths some players go to in search of higher wages, mentioning how some leave the country to play in conflict zones due to the low earnings in Ghana.

“The goal is to keep our players by offering stipends,” Adams explained. “We believe this approach will significantly improve the league.”

Adams is hopeful that this initiative will enhance the standard of the Ghana Premier League. He is now awaiting Parliamentary approval to formally take on his role, where he will succeed Mustapha Ussif.
