Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has committed to restoring 70% of the region’s faulty streetlights within her first 50 days in office.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, the Shai Osudoku MP acknowledged widespread concerns over poor visibility on roads at night due to non-functional or absent streetlights.
“Within my first 50 days, we will tackle these issues head-on. While we may not achieve 100% completion, we are determined to fix at least 70% of the problem,” she assured.
Motorists and residents have long complained about inadequate street lighting, despite the Akufo-Addo-led government’s earlier promise to install 25,000 solar-powered streetlights across the region—a project that failed to materialize.
To address growing safety concerns, the Minister vowed to take a more decisive approach, ensuring strict enforcement through collaboration with Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and security agencies.
“We will enforce the law rigorously. Task forces from the MMDAs, alongside security services, will be deployed to sustain this effort,” she emphasized.
Beyond street lighting, Madam Ocloo also pledged to tackle the region’s persistent flooding issues. She highlighted the ongoing Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, which has been operational since 2019, focusing on improving drainage infrastructure, particularly around the Odaw basin.
“We are working to accelerate the GARID project to mitigate flooding risks,” she stated.
The Minister also stressed the importance of stricter enforcement of building permit regulations to ensure proper urban planning in the region.
