The Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba, has revealed troubling details about an incident that occurred during the ministerial vetting on January 30.
According to Mrs. Ayamba, the Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, engaged in an unprovoked confrontation with the committee’s clerk, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah.
Recalling the events before an investigative committee, Mrs. Ayamba stated, “As soon as the session began, the minority entered, and I witnessed the Minority Leader directing an aggressive attack at the clerk without any provocation.”
She emphasized that, as a woman, she found the situation deeply unsettling and felt compelled to intervene when the hostility persisted.
During the vetting, the chairman instructed the clerk to administer the oath to the nominee, a task she had already performed. However, due to the ongoing tension, she was unable to proceed. Noticing her hesitation, Mrs. Ayamba stepped in, encouraging Gifty to follow protocol.
“You are supposed to listen to the chairman, not anyone else. Administer the oath, why are you sitting down?” she urged.
The situation escalated further when some minority members made personal attacks and questioned Gifty Jiagge-Gobah’s political affiliation. Mrs. Ayamba refused to remain silent in the face of such treatment.
Turning to the Minority Leader, she asserted, “She is a dignified woman and should not be spoken to in that manner. Please, can you stop?”
Explaining her decision to intervene, Mrs. Ayamba stated, “I could not stand by and watch this happen. Gifty deserves respect, and I felt it was my duty to defend her.”
Her remarks highlight concerns over decorum and respect in parliamentary proceedings, particularly in the treatment of officials carrying out their duties.
