The Paramount Chief of the Komenda Traditional Area, Okatakyi Komey VIII, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to make the long-dormant Komenda Sugar Factory operational as part of his ambitious 24-hour economy initiative, aimed at boosting job creation in Ghana.

Speaking during President Mahama’s visit to the Central Region, the chief highlighted the factory’s potential to drive economic growth and provide employment opportunities for the people of Komenda and surrounding areas. He urged the President to prioritize its revival, lamenting that its inactivity over the past eight years has significantly hindered the region’s development.

Beyond the factory, Okatakyi Komey VIII also drew attention to the deteriorating roads in the area, stressing that the poor conditions and heavy dust were causing serious respiratory health issues among residents.

Expressing appreciation for President Mahama’s leadership, the chief commended him for selecting their own, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, as his running mate, paving the way for Ghana’s first female Vice President. He assured the President of the traditional council’s unwavering support.

In response, President Mahama acknowledged the urgency of reviving the sugar factory, stating that it was unacceptable for it to remain inactive for eight years. He revealed that he had instructed the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to compile a detailed report on the factory’s current condition, after which he would take decisive steps to restart operations.

The President assured the people of the Central Region that once revived, the Komenda Sugar Factory would position the region as Ghana’s leading sugar producer.

Adding to the discussion, Samuel Atta Mills, the Member of Parliament for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA), expressed gratitude to President Mahama for his renewed commitment to the factory’s revival. He criticized former President Nana Akufo-Addo for failing to operationalize it during his tenure, arguing that the delay had denied many young people much-needed job opportunities.

Atta Mills voiced confidence that under President Mahama’s leadership, the factory would finally fulfill its purpose, creating sustainable employment for the youth in Komenda and beyond.
