Kofi Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, has proposed that a portion of the revenue generated from the betting tax be allocated to a dedicated sports fund to support and develop the country’s sporting sector.
Mr. Adams, who represents the Buem constituency, emphasized that channeling a percentage of the betting tax into such a fund would be a crucial step toward the long-term growth of sports in Ghana.
In addition to the sports fund, the minister revealed plans to introduce a sports lottery, which would serve as another revenue stream for the sector.
“We believe the time is ripe for this initiative,” Adams stated during an appearance on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show. “A percentage of the betting tax should be earmarked for the sports fund, and we are also looking to introduce a sports lottery to further support this cause.”
The Minister also drew parallels to past government initiatives such as the GETFund for education and the Health Fund established during President Jerry John Rawlings’ administration, suggesting that a similar model could be used to enhance the sports sector.
“We’ve seen the impact of the GETFund for education and the Health Fund, and we must apply the same level of commitment to sports. Investing in sports not only promotes physical well-being but can also reduce the prevalence of diseases through exercise and active participation,” he said.
Meanwhile, various stakeholders continue to push for better funding for infrastructure development, athlete training programs, and general improvements in sports management.
However, the proposal faces opposition from the Mahama-led government, with Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson hinting that the betting tax may be abolished in the upcoming budget, signaling a possible shift in fiscal policy.
