Dr. Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has responded to public criticism regarding his office’s decision to discontinue several high-profile criminal cases. In a press conference on Wednesday, he called on critics to approach the matter with more consideration and clarified that his decisions were made independently, without influence from President John Mahama or any external party.
Dr. Ayine emphasized that he takes full responsibility for the decisions, stating that they were based on a thorough and professional review of each case by his office.
Among the cases discontinued were those involving prominent figures, including former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Asiama, who was implicated in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank. The Attorney General withdrew all charges against him.
The case against former Minority Leader and current Finance Minister Ato Forson, as well as Richard Jakpa, in connection with the controversial ambulance procurement deal, was also dropped.
In another significant move, the long-running trial involving former COCOBOD CEO Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni and businessman Seidu Agongo, who were accused of causing a GH¢271 million financial loss through the Lithovit foliar fertilizer scandal, was discontinued.
Additionally, charges were dropped against former SSNIT boss Dr. Ernest Thompson and three others accused of financial mismanagement, although some individuals from that case remain under prosecution.
Dr. Ayine stressed that his decisions were rooted in legal reasoning and were made after careful consideration of the evidence and legal merit of each case.
