Okudzeto Ablakwa Pledges 24-Hour Passport Processing to Ease Acquisition
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to streamlining passport acquisition in Ghana, aligning with President John Mahama’s 24-hour passport policy. Ablakwa emphasized that the passport acquisition process will soon be significantly improved to ensure faster service delivery.
Government to Employ 100 Additional Staff for Faster Passport Processing
As part of this initiative, the 2025 budget includes provisions to hire 100 additional staff to facilitate the 24-hour passport application process and reduce the overall processing time to just one week.
“We’ve made allocations in the 2025 budget to employ approximately 100 additional staff to roll out the 24-hour passport processing system and significantly reduce delays,” Ablakwa stated while addressing the media.
75,000 Unclaimed Passports and New Courier System
Ablakwa also revealed that over 75,000 passports remain unclaimed at the passport office. He intends to conduct a thorough audit and implement a courier service to ensure applicants receive their passports at their preferred locations.
“We will introduce a courier system so applicants can receive their passports wherever they are. If addresses are available, we will reach out to ensure a smooth process,” he explained.
Performance-Based Reforms for Ambassadors and High Commissioners
The Minister further disclosed that ambassadors and high commissioners will be given Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to guide their work.
“Any ambassador who fails to meet the KPI targets will be removed. We expect monthly reports and major reforms to improve efficiency,” Ablakwa stated.
With these reforms, the passport acquisition process in Ghana is set to undergo a major transformation, ensuring quicker service delivery and improved accessibility for all applicants.
