Political Scientist Urges Government to Take Decisive Action Against Illegal Mining

Dr. Asah Asante, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has called on the government to take urgent and decisive measures to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. Speaking on Morning Star with Naa Dedei Tettey, he criticized the slow pace of the government’s response, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention.

While commending Lands Minister Armah Kofi Buah for acknowledging the devastating impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s forests, Dr. Asante insisted that words alone are not enough. “The minister has been candid, but we need more than just talk. The problem is not beyond us—we can handle it if we apply ourselves to it,” he stated.

He urged authorities to enforce stricter laws and prioritize the restoration of affected lands and water bodies. Additionally, he highlighted the long-term consequences of illegal mining, calling for a collaborative approach involving key stakeholders to find sustainable solutions. “We must not only focus on the revenue from small-scale mining but also consider the cost of reclamation and environmental damage,” he added.

Dr. Asante also supported the government’s decision to scale down the 68th Independence Day celebration as a cost-saving measure. However, he stressed the importance of prioritizing economic productivity over lavish national events. “We need to focus on work and development rather than spending resources on grand celebrations,” he suggested.
