Sammi Awuku Claims NPP Stabilized Economy Before Mahama took over

Sammi Awuku has refuted claims that the economy was “criminally managed” under President Nana Akufo-Addo, asserting that inflation alone does not define economic performance.

In a Facebook post, Awuku argued, “The fact that the general level of prices has gone up does not mean the economy was criminally managed.”

He pointed out that John Mahama inherited an inflation rate of 9.4% from the late President Mills but left office with it at 15.4% in 2016. In contrast, Akufo-Addo reduced inflation to 7.6% in 2019 before global economic crises caused it to rise.

“This imported inflation significantly contributed to Ghana’s inflation rising to 54% by the end of 2022,” he explained.

Awuku credited the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s policies for stabilizing inflation at 23% before Mahama’s return and emphasized a stronger trade balance and higher reserves under Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

“The ‘criminally managed’ economy still recorded over 6% growth, higher than Mahama’s 3.4% in 2016,” he stated, defending Akufo-Addo’s economic management against opposition criticism.
