Former President John Mahama has voiced strong criticism of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration regarding the National Cathedral project, particularly highlighting the excessive proposed cost. Mahama expressed his belief that the cathedral could be completed for a much lower price than the $400 million budgeted for the undertaking.

He pointed out that a similar project in Nigeria, the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, had been built at a fraction of the cost, amounting to only $30 million, and suggested Ghana could achieve a comparable outcome without the hefty price tag. “Given the current economic situation in Ghana, it makes no sense to carry out such an ambitious project at a cost of $400 million. The National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja, which serves all Christian denominations, was completed for $30 million. I am confident that Ghana can complete this project at a far more reasonable cost, and we can raise the necessary funds collectively,” Mahama said.

Speaking at his first National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra on January 12, Mahama further indicated that his administration might reconsider continuing with the project and potentially change its current location. “Any re-evaluation of this project might even involve a change of the site chosen for its construction,” he added.

The National Cathedral project was launched by former President Akufo-Addo, with an estimated cost of $400 million. Initially, Akufo-Addo had pledged that private funds would finance the project, but it was later revealed that public funds were being used for its development.

Despite the allocation of state funds, the project remains unfinished, with mounting concerns over the management of the funds. The former government has faced harsh criticism, including accusations of corruption and the misappropriation of state resources.

Mahama reiterated that his administration would not use public money to complete the cathedral. “On the future of the project, I believe that as Christians, we must build a consensus on how to move forward without resorting to public funds,” he emphasized.

Currently, the National Cathedral is still in the foundational stage. Once completed, the cathedral is planned to serve as a hub for all Christian denominations in Ghana and act as a venue for various religious activities. It is also expected to become a major tourist attraction, featuring a museum, a learning centre, and other supporting facilities.
