The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has announced the appointment of Dr. Frederick Appoh as its new Chief Executive Officer. He takes over from Mr. Yaw Owusu, who served as CEO until December 22, 2024.
Dr. Appoh brings extensive global experience in railway systems, having worked across Africa, Europe, and Asia for over a decade. As a Chartered Railway Systems and Infrastructure expert, he is poised to lead Ghana’s railway modernization efforts.
His career spans major railway projects, where he has played a key role in system integration, rolling stock modernization, and improving operational efficiency. Dr. Appoh has collaborated with renowned industry players such as Bombardier Transportation, Alstom, Siemens Mobility, Transport for London, Network Rail, and Hitachi Rail. Prior to his appointment, he was the Executive Director of RAMS Engineering Ltd, UK.
In his new role, he aims to drive modernization, sustainability, and economic growth within Ghana’s railway sector. His priorities include enhancing the safety and reliability of train operations, fast-tracking Greenfield developments, and upgrading Brownfield projects to improve connectivity, create employment opportunities, and open new economic corridors.
By leveraging advanced technologies and international best practices, Dr. Appoh envisions transforming Ghana’s railway network into a key driver of industrialization and regional development.
Beyond his railway expertise, Dr. Appoh has a background in the British Army’s Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. His academic credentials include a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Railway Systems) from the University of Manchester, an MBA from Cranfield University, an MSc in Reliability Engineering from the University of Manchester, and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
His proficiency in safety standards and compliance (EN50126/EN50129) will be instrumental in Ghana’s railway transformation. The GRDA has called on staff, stakeholders, and contractors to support Dr. Appoh as he steers the sector toward greater achievements.
