The Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has expressed support for the government’s plan to reintroduce road tolls, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the revenue is used effectively to improve road infrastructure and public safety.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the union’s Public Relations Officer, Awilo Attito, stated that while they welcome the initiative, its success depends on proper fund allocation.

“We have learned that the government, through the Roads and Highways Ministry, intends to reintroduce road tolls. We support this move, but it is crucial that the funds generated are used efficiently to maintain and repair roads for the safety of all users,” he said.

Mr. Attito highlighted that road tolls had previously helped manage congestion by discouraging unnecessary travel, which in turn reduced accidents and fatalities. He urged the government to allocate part of the revenue to essential road safety measures, including speed cameras, improved street lighting, and enhanced emergency response systems.

“The government must ensure that toll revenue is invested in new infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and tunnels. Additionally, there should be annual reports to account for how the funds are utilized,” he added.

To ensure a smooth implementation of the policy, the GPRTU plans to engage the Ministry of Roads and Highways in educating drivers and road users on the importance of tolls before the policy takes effect.

Mr. Attito also urged drivers to accept the reintroduction of tolls in good faith and adhere to road regulations to avoid penalties. Furthermore, he called on the government to collaborate with transport unions whenever fuel prices are adjusted to facilitate fair and structured fare reviews.

Additionally, he encouraged drivers to maintain professionalism, particularly during the upcoming Valentine’s Day celebrations.

Several drivers in Keta, who spoke to GNA, expressed their approval of the policy but emphasized the need for the government to ensure that toll revenue is used efficiently to fix bad roads and address other pressing national concerns.
