Former Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari has voiced his disapproval of head coach Otto Addo’s decision to name Mohammed Kudus as Black Stars captain during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
With regular captain Thomas Partey sidelined due to injury, Kudus was handed the armband for Ghana’s crucial doubleheader against Sudan. However, the decision did not yield the desired results, as the Black Stars failed to secure qualification for the tournament, set to be hosted in Morocco later this year.
In an interview with 3Sports, Muntari acknowledged Kudus’ leadership qualities but argued that the 23-year-old was prematurely thrust into the role.
“Kudus, no matter what, will eventually become the captain of the national team,” Muntari stated. “But let it happen naturally—there’s no need to rush him. He doesn’t need the armband to lead; he already commands the game and carries the nation on his shoulders.”
The former AC Milan and Inter Milan star emphasized that Kudus is still in his development phase and should be allowed to focus on his performance without additional pressure.
“Why disturb him? Let him enjoy his football. Kudus hasn’t even reached his full potential yet—what we’re seeing now is just a glimpse. When he fully matures, he will be unstoppable,” Muntari added.
With AFCON qualification hopes dashed, Ghana will now turn its attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, set to resume in March 2025.
