A potentially dangerous accident occurred in Tema in the early hours of Friday after a gas tanker overturned while attempting to avoid a pothole on the dual carriageway near the Tema Technical Institute.
According to reports, the Howo tanker was heading towards the Motorway Roundabout when the driver tried to manoeuvre around a pothole. Unfortunately, the vehicle lost balance and overturned, causing panic among motorists and nearby residents.
Emergency personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) rushed to the scene shortly after the incident was reported at about 1:52 a.m.
As part of efforts to secure the area, the truck head bearing registration number 4615-T1-03 was detached from the tanker and transported to a police station.
Although officials confirmed that there was no visible gas leakage, residents and businesses in the area have been advised to avoid any activity that could generate heat, flames, or sparks as a precautionary measure.
Firefighters remained at the scene throughout the morning, continuously cooling the tanker while awaiting a Bulk Road Vehicle (BRV) to safely transfer the gas from the overturned tanker.
The accident has caused significant traffic disruptions along the stretch, forcing authorities to introduce diversions to ease congestion and protect road users.
Fortunately, no injuries or deaths have been reported.
Authorities are urging motorists to cooperate with traffic officers and exercise patience as emergency teams work to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow.
