Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha will have an extra source of motivation when his country faces Uruguay on Sunday, June 21, after his mother was granted a visa to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup and watch him play in person.

The heartwarming development comes as Cape Verde continue their impressive World Cup campaign following a hard-fought goalless draw against Spain in their opening match.

For years, many Cape Verde citizens have faced difficulties obtaining visas due to strict requirements, including a $15,000 bond linked to visa applications. Although the policy was suspended just a month before the World Cup, many citizens had little time to complete the application process.

However, Vozinha’s mother received special assistance after intervention from United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, following a request from Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Confirming the breakthrough, Jeffries expressed appreciation to all parties involved in making the trip possible.

“I thank Secretary Rubio, U.S. State Department officials, the government of Cabo Verde and FIFA for working together to make this possible,” he said.

The news has brought immense joy to Vozinha, who described the opportunity to have his mother in the stands as something truly special.

“For me, this is very important because all my family always supports me in everything and to have her here, it’s something special. I wish I could bring more… but I think sometimes it’s difficult,” the goalkeeper said.

As Cape Verde prepare for a crucial clash against Uruguay, the presence of his mother could provide the emotional boost Vozinha needs as the Blue Sharks continue chasing their World Cup dream.
