155 Candidates File for Council of State Elections Across Ghana’s 16 Regions

A total of 155 individuals from Ghana’s 16 regions have submitted their nominations to contest the upcoming Council of State elections set for Tuesday, February 11.

According to data compiled by the Daily Graphic, the nominees include 145 men and 10 women, each vying for a single regional representative slot on the advisory council.

Unlike general elections, the selection of Council of State members is conducted through an Electoral College system. Each District Assembly nominates two representatives to participate in the voting process.

Greater Accra Region

Greater Accra’s Regional Electoral Commission (EC) Director, Gladys Pinkrah, confirmed that 13 candidates have filed to contest the region’s single Council of State seat. The candidates include:

  • Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo (Former MP for Kpone-Katamanso)
  • Summertime Kwabillna Ampong
  • Redeemer Worwui
  • Herbert Nii Aryee Annan
  • Samuel Duah
  • Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I (Traditional Ruler, Shai Osudoku)
  • Obed Nyarko
  • Sampson Seyram Kwadzo Agbemabiese
  • Charles Yaw Horvey
  • Joseph Tetteh Sottie
  • Musah Ziyad
  • Albert Borketey Naawu
  • Edmund Siaw Akugbey

Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regions

A total of 29 candidates (27 men, 2 women) are contesting across the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions.

Bono Region (10 candidates)

Aspirants include:

  • Odeneho Dr. Affram Brempong III (Omanhene of the Suma Traditional Council)
  • Nana Aful Kyere (Timber and building contractor)
  • Dominic Adu-Gyimah (Teacher)
  • Umar Adam Sulemana (Businessman)
  • Nana Ankamah Bosomtwe (Retired educationist)
  • Nana Mary Adjeiwaah (Teacher)
  • Nicholas Saddari (Teacher)
  • Peter Kwadwo Ackom (Transport operator)
  • Daniel Owusu Brempong (Physician)
  • Eric Kofi Appiah (Teacher)

Bono East Region (11 candidates)

Candidates include:

  • Pimampim Yaw Kagbrese (Omanhene of the Yeji Traditional Area, Bono East Regional House of Chiefs President)
  • Ofori-Danson Yaw (Lecturer)
  • Michael Kwasi Amponsah (Pastor)
  • Fredrick Duah (Teacher)
  • Simon Addai (Teacher)
  • Prince Amponsah (Assistant Administration Officer)
  • Francis Akwasi Owusu (Health Service Administrator)
  • Opoku Fosu Gyeabour (Engineer)
  • George Buah Inusah (Disaster Management Officer)
  • Moses Kwame Okrah (Teacher)
  • Prince Soro (Image Analyst)

Ahafo Region (8 candidates)

Aspirants include:

  • Bukari Zakari Anaba (Farmer and politician)
  • Abraham Yaw Agyeman (Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist)
  • Emmanuel Appeagyei Kwabena Nana (Businessman)
  • Sir Shai Agyemang (Nurse)
  • Okyere Yaw (Farmer)
  • Anthony Nkrumah Brobbey (Banking & Investment Management Practitioner)
  • Yvonne Opoku Kwarteng (Teacher)
  • Barima Twireku Ampem (Traditional Ruler)

Northern Region

From Tamale, four individuals have filed to contest:

  • Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni (Former MP for Kumbungu)
  • Richard Andani Yakubu (Economist)
  • Nyande Abdul Raqib (Electrical Engineer)
  • Adam Hussein (Businessman)

A total of 32 delegates, two from each of the 16 district assemblies, will vote at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council. One aspirant was disqualified for lacking a valid voter ID.

Central Region

In Cape Coast, 10 candidates, including one woman, are competing. A 44-member electoral college will determine the winner.

Eastern and Western Regions

The Eastern Region has 24 candidates (21 men, 3 women), while the Western Region has nine aspirants.

Upper West Region

Eleven candidates—all male—have filed nominations. The youngest contestant is a 38-year-old accountant, while the oldest is a 68-year-old land administrator.

Upper East Region

Nine men are contesting for the single regional seat. A 30-member electoral college will cast their votes.

Volta Region

Thirteen candidates have filed for the Volta Region’s seat. The youngest aspirant is 29 years old, while the oldest is 71.

Ashanti Region

Kumasi’s contest features 12 candidates (10 men, 2 women) with backgrounds in traditional leadership, farming, business, and journalism.

Western North Region

Three candidates are in the running:

  • Nelson Ackah (President, Ghana National Association of Assembly Members)
  • Michael Aidoo (Western North Regional Chairman, NDC)
  • Col. (Retd) Anthony Aduhene (Retired Military Officer)

Election Background

The Council of State, established under Article 89(1) of the 1992 Constitution, serves as an advisory body to the President. Its members include:

  • A former Chief Justice
  • A former Chief of Defence Staff
  • A former Inspector-General of Police
  • The President of the National House of Chiefs
  • A representative from each region (elected)
  • Eleven other members appointed by the President

Council members remain in office for the President’s term unless they resign, are incapacitated, or are removed with parliamentary approval.

Among its duties, the Council advises the President on appointments and legislative matters, ensuring governance aligns with national interests.

The elections will take place on February 11 at designated regional centers, where the respective electoral colleges will determine the winners.
