Chelsea delivered a commanding second-half performance to defeat League Two side Morecambe 5-0 at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup third round, with Tosin Adarabioyo and Joao Felix both netting twice in the rout.
Morecambe, managed by Derek Adams, arrived with hopes of making history by reaching the fourth round for the first time. Their confidence was briefly buoyed in the 17th minute when goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne made a superb save to deny Christopher Nkunku from the penalty spot, following Yann Songo’o’s handball in the box.
However, Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when defender Adarabioyo’s deflected long-range effort found the back of the net. The goal seemed to lift the home side’s momentum, and Morecambe found themselves increasingly under pressure as the game wore on.
Christopher Nkunku capitalized on defensive errors to double Chelsea’s lead just five minutes into the second half. Adarabioyo then added his second with a clinical finish in the 70th minute, effectively ending any hopes Morecambe had of staging an upset.
Joao Felix took center stage in the closing stages, scoring twice in quick succession (70′ and 75′) to give Chelsea’s dominance a more accurate reflection on the scoreboard. Felix’s sharp finishing showcased Chelsea’s attacking prowess as they put the game firmly out of reach.
Despite the heavy defeat, Morecambe’s 3,000 traveling fans kept up their vocal support throughout the match. The League Two side, currently battling relegation, can take consolation in earning £350,000 from their trip to Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea ended their four-game winless streak with this emphatic victory and can now shift their focus to Sunday’s fourth-round draw as they aim to continue their FA Cup campaign.
